June/July 2011 Small Works

I made these watercolors during my collaborative artist-residency with Sam Weinberg, at the LoBot Gallery! We are loving Oakland, and have found a way to stay here after our residency. It is very exciting to be living some place so different, though I miss my friends and family on the east coast. The art scene in Oakland is very vibrant, and I am glad to be joining it!

These drawings were not made collaboratively, but are filled with influences from life with Sam. I plan to continue to make more for our show opening August 26th, Finding Friendship. The title of our show was inspired by my west coast cousin Laura Reyes and her adorable and friendship confused dog Austin! Her beautiful art can be seen at The Aura In Laura.  Stay tuned for sneak peaks of  the rest of the Finding Friendship show!

Painting: Imaginary Strangers Series

November 2, 2010 § Leave a comment

I am working on building a website, anticipated launch will be by May 2011. Until then I hope this blog will provide a place for me to share work in progress and maybe some information about my process.

In Progress 11/2/2010

I am currently working on a body of work tentatively titled Imaginary Strangers. My paintings reflect my interest in connecting with reality through un-real imagery.  The animals in my painting are a jumping off point for me to embark on an exploration of emotion through imagery.  I had previously defined my icons as “Monsters”, but as   I continue to work, the idea of them being less scary than a monster keeps being more and more apparent. They are more like strangers, creators which should be approached warily, but with the potential of becoming your imaginary friend.  The paintings are created using a wide range of materials, the majority are done on Reeves BFK or canvas, using charcoal, Acrylic paint, and often times Sumi Ink.

Where Am I?
